Meat alternatives are vegetarian and or vegan food options that have been manufactured to taste, cook and look like meat. Alternatives to meat are typically made of mushrooms, textured vegetable protein mainly from soy beans, and the new kid on the block yellow pea isolate and vital wheat gluten, called wheat meat or seitan. And of course you have tofu which has been around for 2000 years or more.
